LOUIS (UPI) With Al Hrabosky and Butch Metxger both throwing strikes in the same night, St Louis manager Vera Rapp found new hope in his rejuvenated bull pen. "We thought that was our strong suit when we made the deal for Rawly East-wick," Rapp said.

"But if we had any type of relief at all over our last road trip (in I 11 i Red! 8-1, Cubs Larry Biittner delivered a run-scoring single and Jerry Morales and Manny Trillo added sacrifice flies in the eighth to give the Cubs a split after the Reds broke an eight-game losing streak, their longest in 11 years, in the opener. Time changes announced for tourney The starting times and fields for the Flat River girls' softball tournament have been changed somewhat, Catherine Deffry, city parks and recreation director, said today. A conflict in the scheduled was changed to set the first of four possible games in the girls' tournament for 6 p.m. on Field No. 1 at the Sports Complex.

The next three games will follow at 7 p.m., 8 p.m., and 9 p.m. at the Sports Complex on Field 1. The Stars and Angels will play at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will play against the Blues at 7 pjn. The second-game winner will meet the Robins at p.m.

and, if necessary, the final game of the double-elimination tournament will be played at 9 pjn. Reb Boosters will meet The Central Booster Club will hold its first meeting of the year school year Thursday. The meeting has been set for 7:30 pjn. at the Central schools cafeteria. All members of the Booster Club are urged to attend the meeting.

New officers will be elected for the club, and plans for the club's 1977-78 year will be discussed. WniCn UK UKVWUB UTUppCQ-U 13 games) we'd be really close in the division race. We're lucky to be where we are, though fighting." Hrabasky came in to get the final out in the seventh inning Wednesday night and cut short a twoun Atlanta rally. Metzger pitched the final two scoreless innings to preserve a 5-3 Cardinal victory. The Braves held a 3-2 lead and had the bases loaded when Hrabasky got dangerous Willie Montanex to hit into an inning-ending forceout "AH I was concerned about was throwing a strike.

If he hit it, he hit it even if it was a grand slam," Hrabosky said. "I'd feel better than giving up a walk and forcing in a run. Walk him and there's nothing your defense can do for you. I've been having control problems and it's good to know I can still throw a strike when I have to." Hrabosky, who got the nod to regrow his mustache and beard last week along with a stern reprimand from club owner August A. Busch said the lifting of Rapp's ban on facial hair has relaxed the team and helped produce a five-gami winning streak.

"I think it's apparent on the ballclub bow relaxed we are," said Hrabosky, who raised his record to J-4 with the win. "1 feel extremely comfortable with myself. There's no tension at all between Vera and myself. Vera and I are the two most relaxed persons on the field now. "We're communicating better than we ever bad," added Hrabosky, who said he had a tf-minute throwing session with Rapp and pitching Coach Claude Osteen Tuesday.

"Vera and Claude picked up things I was doing wrong and I agreed 100 per cent I had been very upset with my mechanics," Hrabosky said. After Hrabosky stopped the Braves' rally, the Cardinals scored three times in the bottom of the seventh. Garry Templeton knocked in the winning run with a sacrafke fly and Tony Scott brought home an insurance run with his third straight single. Reliever Don Collins, who replaced Rick Camp, walked Lou Brock with the bases loaded to bring home Heity Cruz with the tying run. Metzger, who said his ball is "just beginning to take off' this season, pitched the last two innings to record his second save.

Rapp said Hrabosky had his "best velocity." The "Mad however, credited his regained form to his regrown beard. "I felt like cutting my throat before," said Hrabosky. "Now I look into the mirror and see something ugly. That's good." "I'm enjoying the game again," Bill Robinson said Wednesday night That was after he helped the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Houston Astros, 3-2, in 11 innings. Miscast as a savior to 1967-69 Yankee teams, Robinson never hit higher than .240 and found more frustration than a politician with laryngitis.

Since being sold to Pittsburgh in April 1975 he has pinch hit, filled in and played occasional stretches as a regular all with authority. "It's like a new lease on life, believe me," he said. With Pittsburgh trailing 2-1 in the ninth he hit a Joe Sambito pitch over the center-field fence. In the 11th he walked, advanced on a sacrifice and an error and scored on Rennie Stennett's single. Art Howe singled in a run and Roger Metzger doubled in another as Houston assumed a 2-0 lead in the sixth.

In other games, Cincinnati split with Chicago, winning, 6-2, before bowing, 5-1, New York topped San Francisco, 7-4, San Diego edged Montreal, 7-5, and Los Angeles stung Philadelphia, 7-5. In the American League, Milwaukee drubbed Boston, 14-5, Baltimore stopped New York, 64, Detroit shaded Chicago, 3-1, Kansas City tipped Cleveland, 5-4, in 11 innings, Minnesota socked Seattle, 4-1, and California ripped Oakland, 9-3. He's going to run the hockey club." Dean added, "Ralston Purina is in a highly competitive business, and we're used to driving hard.

That's the way Emile is going to run; the' hockey club. We don't expect to lose money on the Blues." Asked whether he would continue as coach, Francis said, "This is a very serious matter, and I want to give it a lot of thought. If I choose not to continue as coach, I have several people in mind." ST. LOUIS (UPI) Ralston Purina one of the nation's corporate giants, has reached-tentative agreement to buy the financially troubled St Louis Blues of the National Hockey League. The Blues, owned principally by ailing businessman Sidney Salomon have been fighting money problems for two years.

Salomon has said the chief cause of the problems was the financial drain of owning the St. Louis the renovated building in which the Blues play. R. Hal Dean, board chairman of Ralston Purina, explained at a news conference Wednesday his company is acquiring only the hockey team. The Arena will be owned by Cousins Mortgage and Equity Investments of Atlanta, which holds a $5.4 million mortgage balance on the Arena.

The building wQl be operated by a joint venture including Sportservice Corp. of Buffalo, N.Y., and St Louis businessmen Joe Simpkins, Farrell Kahn and King Carter. "Hockey is not our business," Dean said. "We stepped into what was a last-ditch effort to keep the Blues in St. Louis.

Either we stepped in or the Blues left town. "We did it for a very simple reason. We think the Blues are a civic asset I think it would have been a blow if we lost the Blues." Ralston Purina, the world's largest producer of animal feed, last year had headquarters, known as Checkerboard Square, is located a few miles from the Arena. Dean said Ralston was putting up about $4 million in cash, including enough money to satisfy the team's creditors. Dean declined to specify the "complicated details" remaining to be resolved before the sale of the franchise is made final.

Emile Francis, who had been the Blues' general manager and coach last season, immediately was appointed president and general manager of the team, and Dean made clear Francis would be in charge of the Blues. i 1-1 1 i-i IM 1-1 1 Uaaerweea Hrakek; (W Mallear Saee-kletifer (1) i n.
