Then, on Wednesday, Richardson said the team would put on their pads for the first time. "We are doing some things a little earlier this year," he "sincere don't have as much time and we have ajittle more to teach.

16 that aspect, the lack'of a great number of experienced players will hurt. However, besides the regulars, Richardson said that several of the younger members of last year's team saw action on special squads and in games that the Knights won by large scores. But the proof for the Knights will not be in last year's efforts. How hard the players work this season will determine the team's effectiveness and, through the two-a-day workouts, which begin at 9 a.m. and 6 they have their work cutout for them.

Cardinal starter Lynn McGIothen had held the Padres to just four hits for one run MONDAY, By Shawn McCarver Daily Journal Sports Writer The Central High School Rebels held their opening football practice yesterday evening. The team practiced at Central High School. The players were dressed in gym shorts and helmets as they went through their annual get-in-shape first practice.

The 42-man squad went through various exercises and drill work as it strived to brush up on the basic fundamentals of the game. Coach Charles "Buck" Riley said he was happy with the turnout of players. Central has lead 2-0 Commerce Bank rallied to tie the game in the sixth inning. A single run in the fifth inning was followed by the three runs in the sixth necessary to tie the contest. Jinkerson, Mallow and Mecey had singles in the sixth inning as the game was tied.

Then, after a triple by Botkin's Johnson was wasted in the sixth inning and Commerce Bank went down in order in the seventh, Kinney gave his team the win and a 2-0 lead in games with his home run. After tonight's contests, two more games are scheduled Wednesday and the final contest could be played on Thursday night at the Sports Complex. Commerce Bank is in trouble trailing 2-0, but the series is still up for the taking. REALLY tourney Good turnout aids Farmington faces ByRaySlover Daily Journal Sports Editor The turnout of players at Farmington was large, and the staff is hopeful as the Knights opened their preseason conditioning and workouts Monday at Farmington High School. The defending conference champions, however, face some rebuilding this year. Coach Jack Richardson his staff held two practices in the first day of work, and will continue to work with the players twice daily until classes begin. There were 55 players in grades 10-12 at the practices and a large number, 54, of freshman attending the workouts. However, the team will not have a vast reserve of experience to rely on.

The team lost all but three or four players with regular-time experience from last year's team, a squad that recorded an 8-3 season and reached the first round of the state Class 3A playoffs. The Knights lost to Columbia Rock Bridge High School, the eventual state Class 3A Botkin Lumber, Farmington's entrant in the world series' between the Flat River and Farmington men's softball league winners, jumped to a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven-game series Monday night. Botkin defeated Flat River league champion Commerce Bank 8-5 in the first game of the tournament and 10-9 on a home run by Dave Kinney in the seventh inning of the second game. The series continues tonight with two more games. The series, which has games scheduled into Thursday, is being played at the Flat River Sports Complex.

Game time for the first of tonight's two contests is 7 p.m. Kinney, batting as the first player up for Botkin in the last inning of play Monday, broke up the tie second game with his home run. The two games featured plenty of hitting by both teams. Two three-run innings by Botkin moved them from a 2-2 tie in the first game. Both teams scored twice in the second inning.

Paul Amsden had a base hit in the Botkin at-bat, and Commerce Bank committed two errors to help Botkin score. Then, a walk, an error and singles by Fred Mallow and Mark McCord got the runs in for Commerce Bank. The fourth inning saw two more Botkin hits and three runs. Kinney and Mike Hopkins singled and both scored, as did Barry Holmes. Red Barton and Terry Jinkerson singled to keep Commerce Bank close.

Barton scored to make it 5-3. Howard Hoehn keeps a tag on Commerce Bank's Dave Cramp rebuilding By Eddie Kekec Daily Journal Sports Writer The North County Raiders opened their 1976 football season with two-a-day practices on Monday. Riley is also happy with the turnout of sophomores and juniors. Besides the returning seniors, the Rebels will be well staffed with juniors. Some of the more experienced juniors are Gary McBride, Marty Mathes, Donnie Hardy, Donnie Bess, Tom Franklin and David Hulsey. These juniors should back the returning seniors well. Some of the seniors are Mike Sago, John Mabery, David Easter, Joe Easter and John Hovis.

In addition to the returning seniors, Jeff LaPlante and-Craig Baker, two new players, have come out for the team. champion, to Union High School in the first round of state, and to Potosi. The Knights face a season of nine games in 1976. The nonconference schedule opens on Sept. 3 against Sikeston.

The next non-conference foe for Farmington is Washington. Then the team has an off date. The spot was filled last year by Rock Bridgebut the school could not find an opponenHtf take the spot when the Farmington-Rock Bridge series was ended. "It was difficult to find someone," Richardson said. "The state changed its rules somewhat by moving the first game back one week.

And, we had our first two dates already committed. Being in the middle of the season, it was hard to find a school that could match up with us. The schools that were available were either some distance away or demanded playing a Saturday game. "But I think that nine games will be appropriate this Richardson said. Both teams have played well against Farmington in McNamara added.

The San Diego come-from-behind victory stole the thunder from Lou Brock's personal performance. The St. Louis speedster had five singles in six trips to the plate, knocking in two runs. He also stole two bases to bring his season total to 38. "He's got a good body.

He takes care of himself," Davis said of Brock. "When it dwindles, you're dead." Rick Sawyer, who has pitched two shutouts in three games since joining the Padres July 31, appeared headed for a loss as St. Louis knocked him out of the game in the sixth. Coach Matt Haug said that he was disappointed in the number of people who did not make the mile times.

"The boys are not in as good a shape as I hoped," Haug said. North County has only three returning varsity lettermen. Seniors Chip Peterson, Danny Portell and Dudley May make up the Raider core of lettermen. Haug said that the team would be young everywhere. The offensive line should be solid with returning seniors, but the defense will be young.

Haug sees his team as having a lot of potential, but wants to wait and see how things turn out. 1 ESLEi Mm s3 PAYS 15 Years of Planned Breeding Registered Aberdeen Angus wr.
